Recky Lai

OVERVIEW

Recky is an associate in the firm’s Insolvency and Estate & Wealth Advisory Practice Groups. Since her call to the bar in 2022 Recky has practiced primarily in insolvency where she has experience assisting both debtors and secured creditors in foreclosure proceedings and asset recovery and realization. She also practices in estate litigation and has experience assisting executors and beneficiaries in defending against wills validity and wills variation claims.

Recky earned her B.A. in Economics from The University of British Columbia and her J.D. from the University of Victoria, where she was actively involved as a Law Student Society Representative and VP, Events for the UVic Business Law Association. She also completed a co-op term with the Department of Justice and competed in the Harold G. Fox Moot.

While Recky grew up in B.C., she was born in Taiwan, is fluent in Mandarin, and has completed various work terms in Asia. Her deep understanding of cultural differences enables her to navigate cross-cultural interactions with ease, particularly during dispute resolution discussions.

In her spare time, she is an avid foodie, board game enthusiast and ever-hopeful Canucks fan.

REPRESENTATIVE CLIENT WORK

• Assisting secured and unsecured creditors with asset recovery during bankruptcy proceedings
• Advising business owners with contract breaches arising from asset purchase agreements and share purchase agreements
• Supporting debtors in negotiating with financial institutions for debt forgiveness and during foreclosure proceedings
• Helping executors petition for notice of dispute removals, defend against will validity claims and navigate bankruptcy proceedings
• Assisting beneficiaries defend against wills variation claims
